Bernadette Heald, Wired Frozen (People)

I took this image of my daughter using a medium format film camera at a time when she was struggling with her need to be constantly connected to social media but also maintaining human to human interaction. I grew up in the non-digital age and as a parent I find it difficult to manage that which I do not understand myself, whereas it is second nature to her plugged in generation. The cords wrapping around her and the device she is holding represent the all-encompassing web of the internet and it’s social platforms which keep her frozen in time. I love working with black and white film, the absence of colour adds to the rawness of emotion while the analogue process adds another layer which highlights the challenges we face finding our way in an ever increasing digital world.
