It was a cold, windy morning when I noticed a sheepish and lone black-shouldered kite perched on a pine tree. I followed its glance to a male kite that was practicing a mating ritual on a nearby bush. After about 20 minutes, he worked up the courage and launched into the air, wings outstretched, and completed a successful ritual.
