Michelle Tu, What matters? (People)

The central theme of Mardi Gras 2020, what matters? Two powerful words that question our personal, community and social values. As Oxford street shuts down once again, crowds gather to witness the remarkable event that is Mardi Gras. One of the largest, vibrant and most glamorous street parades in the world; Darlinghurst lights up with all colours of the rainbow, glitter adorns the bitumen road and laughter fills the ears of those present. Regardless of race, gender, age, sexuality and religion; we stand as one to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. In this image I capture the 78ers, the first Mardi Gras group. Leading each Mardi Gras parade, the story of the 78ers is one of strength, determination and pride. This shot I truly believe sums up the theme of that night, these individuals standing together as one, smiles on their faces with positivity and energy just radiating out truly reflects the significance of this incredible parade. Respect, inclusion, pride, sexism and community are just some of the words that reflect “what matters” to the truly inspirational 78ers.
