In the Altai Mountains of Mongolia, I stayed with a nomadic Kazakh eagle hunting family. When I first met the son, he was dressed in an old T shirt and pants and looked like any other bored teenager, languidly kicking the dirt around the family ger. Later, at the eagle festival, I was captivated by this dashing and single-minded competitor, and could hardly reconcile that he was the same child. Having donned his fox hat and coat, with his eagle on his gloved wrist, he was instantly transformed from a boy to a mighty hunter.
