Chris Rands, There goes the neighbourhood (PLACES 2021)

In August 2019 a mural on Bondi's famous beach promenade by artist Luke Cornish, commenting on Australia's hardline offshore immigration detention programme, was defaced after the local council voted not to remove it. Although the vandalism spoke to the changing nature of this once bohemian working class suburb, the result seemed to me to lend the image even greater power by highlighting the country's growing political intolerance.
