Emotionless. Or so it appears, on the surface. She sits still, as tradition asks. An unintentional homage to Russian tradition. One I never expected but captivated me once I discovered it. A tradition that asks for nothing but presence. In the moments where joy is quiet, love remains. Unspoken, yet unwavering. Reminiscent to the journey of motherhood, Where devotion and exhaustion coincide. This image is from a series that I created called Cyclone Motherhood. The series was born from the real life experience I had with Cyclone Alfred, and its resemblance to motherhood. I was prepared, though not mentally, yet I knew I was ready… excitement taking precedence. Fearful, yet fascinated simultaneously. I very poetically grew to love the metaphorical concept of a cyclone through this experience, and I knew I had to capture that essence. There was too much beauty and opportunity in it not to, so I captured that essence the best way I knew how. I wanted to create a series of images with various women and their children, where I could capture the stillness between meltdowns… the “quiet eye of the storm”, if you will. This is where magic shows up. This is where the raw essence of love and motherhood always prevails. The russian tradition of expressionless portraits moved me once I learned of it, and I knew it would perfectly depict motherhood in this series.
