Amber Brentnall, The Pest (ANIMALS 2023)
As our beautiful country becomes more urbanised with residential development, many of a wildlife species are impacted and displaced. There is nothing more invasive than the Indian Miner bird, which was introduced in the 1860s to control pests in Victoria's market gardens. Indian Miners are a highly aggressive, territorial bird that compete for space and hunt away our native wildlife, particularly small birds such as wrens and small honeyeaters. I try and shoo them away from my garden, this image was taken during one of those frustrations. You can see the attitude and determination on the birds face. These birds are absolute pests!
