Maryanne Gorman, The One (PEOPLE 2022)

I love driving through the city at night with excited anticipation of not knowing what to expect in the hive of nocturnal activity. In this photo, I was drawn to the girl on the phone who was oblivious to the world around her. Then I realized, that every person was on their own mission and one lady stood out more than anyone. For some reason she stood out. Like she had been selected for something. Having a close young relative with cancer, I always ask the question why her? This photo is like a response. Selection is for no reason, it is random and it doesn't discriminate from young to old. She just happened to be the one.
