JULIE SPENCER, The Forester (People)

Dick, now 88, leans on a vase he hand turned from one of his favourite timbers in a spare room in his home in the Blue Mountains. Now a retired forester, a career that has spanned over 65 years, his love of forests, timber, wood turning and birds is all present in a dishevelled display that he threatens to organise one day. So it was with quiet reluctance he allowed me to photograph him here. His own handywork - spheres of rare and unusual timbers, unintentionally resembling the solar system, sits atop an old wardrobe. Currently he volunteers as a consultant to private properties not far from home, for the planting, care and management of native trees. Many of these projects are for the purpose of protecting endangered bird species. Dick also helps out in a local plant nursery.
