Covered in battle scars, a male southern elephant seal chills on a Grytviken (South Georgia) beach, putting himself in a defensive position to watch over his ladies (back from the beach) and any other males who’ll pop out of the sea and try to take those ladies for himself. Alpha males –caka “beach masters” like this unit – can grow to up to 6m in length and weigh around 4 tonnes.
