Aa dusty oval an hour from Kathryn, the heart of Barunga Festival, first nations women from community play Aussie Rules with fierce pride and strength. Their communities cheer and shout from the boundary line through holes in the fence and the score board gave out an hour ago due to the heat. The dry grass kicks up in bursts as the contest moves across sandy ground. The women's game has found it's place here in the dust. The festival is a major gathering for Indigenous people from across northern Australia — a celebration of culture, country and connection. In this moment — where sport, spirit and place collide — the game belongs to them, as much to us.
