Jesslyn Saw, Spines (ANIMALS 2024)

Echidnas are not the easiest of subjects to photograph. Firstly, they usually come out at dusk which makes lighting a bit of an issue. Secondly, they almost always have their dark furred face in the undergrowth looking for food. Combine those two things and it's really difficult to get a good shot of them. However, their spines are fascinating because they are actually modified hairs to protect against predators. I took this side profile shot in monochrome to really highlight those spines.
