Carrie Simms, Saxon Fortified Church, Viscri (PLACES 2026)

Transylvania is a historic region in Romania noted for its fortified Saxon churches; created when German colonists were permitted to settle in the area by the Kings of Hungary in the 12th century. Viscri is one of the remaining 150 well preserved fortifications, and designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
