Robert McDonald, Rotoiti’s Veil of Time (PLACES 2025)

Star trail stacked image of 7x 10 minute exposures. Shot at lake Rotoiti. Nelson Lakes National Park. In Māori mythology, the Nelson Lakes (specifically Rotoroa and Rotoiti) were created by the great chief Rākaihautū. He used his digging stick (kō) to dig holes, which then filled with water, forming the lakes. These lakes were also stocked with food (eels, mussels, and waterfowl) for those who would travel through the area, including those seeking greenstone (pounamu) from the West Coast
