This is the face of an overcomer. During Mao’s cultural revolution, You Mei Situ’s family home was ransacked by the Red Guard and her husband sent to do hard labour on a farm. Then there was the problem of her religion. “I am Catholic, and they said I was a bad woman.” Sent away to a re-education camp, You Mei stuck with her faith but suffered further before moving to freedom in Australia in 1997. I am a visual storyteller and in this portrait 92-year-old You Mei reflects on her life.
