During an open day at the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne, I found this elderly man seated alone among rows of empty bentwood chairs. Hands clasped, seemingly lost in thought, he was indifferent to the crowd moving around him. I was drawn to the tension between the repeating geometry of the chairs and the stillness of the single human presence among them.
