My 16-year-old boy in a suit for the first time, shirt too crisp, collar too tight, shoes too shiny for someone who lives in scuffed-up sneakers and sarcasm, trying not to care, but I catch him checking the mirror again, hair already perfect, pretending he doesn’t want to impress. He shrugs off compliments like they’re contagious, like he hasn’t been secretly excited for weeks. This is a turning point, somewhere between schoolboy slouch and man-in-the-making swagger, part lad, part gentleman, part “Mum, stop fussing,” part “Do I look alright though?”an eye roll, a smirk, a flicker of pride, my baby in a bloody blazer growing up right in front of me.
