Portrait of Australian photographer Mark Lang, with his truck LIL. In 1996 Mark embarked on a seven-year journey around Australia photographing the landscape. The journey culminated with three years in the company of Big Bill Neidjie, Gagadju elder and traditional custodian of Kakadu, Northern Territory, resulting in the book ‘Old Man’s Story’ published by Aboriginal Studies Press, 2015. Mark’s portrait of Bill Neidjie is part of the NPG Collection. I photographed Mark to share both his and Bill’s story. Collaborative storytelling can reframe social collective memory, foster empathy and cultural understanding, strengthening community bonds and sustaining shared values across generations.
