Katharine Campbell, Pooningbah, place of the echidna (PLACES 2024)
The distinctive rectangular basalt columns at Fingal Head (Pooningbah - place of the echidna - in local indigenous language) in northern NSW are an impressive sight. I chose a slow shutter speed to enhance the contrast between these solid stone structures, said to be formed some 23 million years ago as lava flowed into the ocean, and the swirling seas which crash through the channel. According to Aboriginal legend the columns at the tip of the headland formed when the Pooning (echidna) was chased into the ocean.
