Autumn in Tasmania can be exquisite for photography, with calm, windless days, soft golden afternoon light, and glassy waters under cloudless skies. This photograph was taken on one of those exquisite autumn days in May 2025. The location is Northwest Bay in southern Tasmania, looking north from near Coningham Beach towards the Tinderbox peninsula, with South Arm and Bruny Island in the distance. I took this infrared 850nm photograph of my wife Bronwen as she paddled in her kayak. The dark glassy water reminded me of obsidian; a type of volcanic rock formed from quickly cooled lava which is typically black with a glassy lustre.
