Sharon Haasbroek, Muddy Camouflage (ANIMALS 2026)

On a recent trip to South Africa, we visited a Wildlife Nature Reserve. There had been so much rain that the zebras were exceptionally clean. Their coats were pitch black and bright white. We were tracking this small group of zebras and when the male, who was in the lead, walked out of the long grass and onto the dirt road, he immediately lay down and rolled in the mud. This created a some sort of temporary camouflage, allowing him to blend into the tall grasses and trees.
