Brendan Jack, "Mind The Gap #1" (PLACES 2026)

The old entrance to Sydney's city underground platforms at Central Railway Station is still marked with a carved plaque above the opening in the original sandstone wall. After subsequent remodelling, the old entrance is now a portal to a void. Most commuters don't notice this visual incongruity in their daily hurry. From certain angles, it looks as though the old entry could still be accessed by internal stairs from below. If it could, that last exiting step would be a doozy. The Railway's well known public safety slogan for train travel, "Mind The Gap", seemed an appropriately ironic & humorous title for this photo.
