The Greek Kafenio is a symbol of community. It represents the fabric of Greek life, particularly in suburban and rural areas. It’s a place where generations have exchanged stories, news and opinions. While many modern cafés have emerged, the traditional kafenio still exists. They are cherished symbols of Greek identity and hospitality. This is a portrait of Kostas, the proprietor of a Kafenio on the Greek island of Rhodes. It was originally his father's until his passing. Kostas is now the custodian. A photograph of Kostas father sits proudly behind the counter as if watching the day to day goings on.
