Kyle Hoffmann, Iguazú (PLACES 2022)

Iguazú (or Iguaçu in Portuguese) is an incredible place full on contrasts. Upriver is very placid, calm, and un-foreboding. Coming closer to the falls you are greeted with a deafening roar from the “devil’s throat”. Iguazu makes up the largest waterfall system in the world. Legend says that there was a beautiful woman named Naipí who was arranged to marry a deity. She though had already fallen in love with a mortal named Tarobá and they planned their escape together by canoe. The deity was incensed into a rage and sliced the river they were traveling. Creating the waterfalls and condemning the lovers into an eternal fall.
