Michelle Young, Homage to Family (PEOPLE 2022)

This portrait is of 15 year old Jemima, who hasn't yet chosen whether she will wear the hijab. Her current school doesn't allow any students to wear them, so she will decide when she finishes high school. In this portrait, Jemima wanted to explore wearing one and to pay respects to her family, her religion and heritage. She wears her grandmothers scarf that she brought with her when she first arrived in Australia, her mothers necklace and fathers prayer beads.
