Sarah Jenkins, Girl Power - Seduction, Strength and Devotion (PEOPLE 2021)

The traditional bull jumping ceremony of the Hamar tribe is the rite of passage for a young Hamar boy transitioning into manhood, where he has to leap naked across the backs of 14 cattle four times; thereby earning the right to become a Maza and marry. As part of the ritual, the jumper’s female relatives dance and jump frenetically, flirting with the Maza (single men), and begging them to whip their backs with sticks. The bloody wounds and deep scars symbolise their love, strength and loyalty to the jumper. They are proud of their scars.
