Kathleen Wilton, First Encounters (ANIMALS 2025)

In the inky depths of the ocean, where light is a rare visitor, a solitary squid emerges from the shadows. Its large, forward-facing eyes, among the largest in the animal kingdom, are adapted to pierce through the darkness, allowing it to navigate and hunt in the deep sea . The photograph captures a fleeting moment—a silent communication between species, where the boundaries between human and marine life blur. In the monochrome stillness, the squid's delicate form and the diver's presence converge, reminding us of the mysteries that unfold beneath the ocean's surface when we venture into its depths.
