Between 1903 and 2016, the Nevada State Prison was the designated institution in Nevada for capital punishment. In 1921, a bill authorizing the use of lethal gas had passed the Nevada State Legislature. In the 1980's the gas chamber was fittd with a gurney when lethal injection was introduced as means of execution. In all, 43 death row inmates were executed by either gas or lethal injection.
