Amber King, Echoes of the Past (PLACES 2025)
Echoes of the past I recently converted an Olympus OM10 mark ii to full spectrum infrared along with 680, 720 and 850 Kolari filters and took it to Tasmania. This photograph was captured in Launceston’s famous Cataract Gorge and of the Alexandra Suspension Bridge built in 1904. It is a significant site for the Palawa, the Tasmanian Aboriginal people of this area, and specific fire regimes were conducted for the different hillsides suitable for their needs. I have aimed to capture a sense of nostalgia, highlighting the bridge as a connection between past and present. The monochrome palette emphasises the rugged textures of the gorge’s cliffs and trees with the bridge cutting cleanly through the image drawing the viewer towards the far hillside and floating cloud.
