Timo Balk, Dreamscape (PLACES 2021)
This photograph was taken on an unusually cold morning last December. I was absolutely delighted with the forecast of calm and foggy weather. During the long lockdown in Melbourne last winter, I felt I had missed out on so many opportunities to shoot in these conditions. That morning, I awoke early for a sunrise shoot in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. I positioned myself on a steep ridgeline, facing the direct sunlight. Like a silky veil, the fog wraps around the trees in this dreamy looking landscape. I love how the light penetrates the fog, creating beautiful light beams. I used a telephoto lens to compose a small segment of the farmland that was the most interesting to me. The line of trees in the foreground caught my attention, which stood out nicely in the middle of a vineyard. The zigzagging tracks lead the eye up the fog-covered hill in the distance. It was a very productive morning where I took many images that I like. The photograph that I’ve submitted is the one I’m most proud of.
