Stuart Bell, DRAGON DUEL (ANIMALS 2025)
Played out in the ancient gorges of Karijini the male Blue Skimmer reveals a timeless battle of survival in its most primal form and being the predatory dragonfly then life in the fast lane is unsympathetic, when you’re the prey that is. Having captured one of its own on the wing, death knell being delivered by way of decapitation, big blue has landed just in front of me and began to cannibalise its headless counterpart. It was quite the fracas, strong versus weak, big versus small. Within a few seconds of aerial combat around me it was all over for the lesser dragon and with his tail up and that ferocious stance, big blue had his meal. Kalamina Gorge, Karijini NP, Western Australia.
