ANNE LEVITCH, DARKNESS IN THE ABSENCE OF COLOUR (PEOPLE 2026)

This work captures a moment of quiet reflection at a difficult time for the artists partner who often visits her studio. The Bondi Massacre in December 2025, triggered a period of deep darkness for the subject reflected in the enveloping shadow with a distant light on his face. Raised by a strong, determined Christian mother and quiet submissive Jewish father his bi-racial background had been the subject of curiosity and introspection for some time. Distant in a scale that echoes his solitude, the image explores the light of dawning self- awareness and the horrors of ancestral identity held within the darkness of his introspection. The title is taken from a poem by Susan Grant.
