Neville Jones, Damara woman (People)
Little is known of the origin of the Damara although it is generally thought that they and the San were the original inhabitants of Namibia, predating the Himba, Herero and Zemba. Like the San, and unlike the Himba, Herero, Nama and Germans, the Damara believed in community ownership of property rather than personal ownership. This is why the Damara were displaced so effectively when those cultures arrived. The Damara account for about 8% of the population of Namibia and their 34 clans are spread throughout the country, with the majority in Damaraland in north central Namibia. There are also some clans in neighbouring Botswana and South Africa.
