Visitors landing at Deception Island - a volcanic caldera in the South Shetlands sector of Antarctica, another wilderness area that humans tried to claim (or annex) for industry – where the land is still pockmarked by the abandoned ruins of the Hektor Whaling Station (1906–1931). During these years the station processed at least 140,000 barrels of whale oil (accounting for the lives of thousands of whales) and today its various industrial relics are, thankfully, being reclaimed by the elements.
