The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a de facto state covering the north-eastern part of the island of Cyprus. It is only recognised by Turkey and considered to be part of the Republic of Cyprus by all other States. People from the TRNC are issued legal documents that will allow them travel into Turkey, but these are not strictly Turkish documents that would allow them total freedom of movement. The passport is valid in only a few countries in the world due to the limited international recognition of Northern Cyprus. A Northern Cypriot passport is valid in Anguilla, Pakistan, Tanzania, Turkey, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Turkish Cypriots are also issued with Turkish passports. A university education is an attractive option for many from Middle East countries. The degree's are taught in English which is desirable for those wanting to move to Europe. There are many universities in the TRNC and it one of the main attractions for foreigners. ‘Ali’ is from Yemen and applied to study in the TRNC. Universities in North Cyprus are known for quality Education at International standards and are delivered in English which is desirable to many people hoping to move to Europe someday. ‘Ali’ had to drop out for financial reasons and thus lost his residence status. Clearly, he did not want to return to war-torn Yemen, and he applied for a so-called Letter of Concern from UNHCR and got it. This document asks the authorities not to deport him, but it has no legal status, and therefore one can never fully rely on it. For one thing, he cannot travel. The moment he leaves the TRNC, they won’t let him back in. 'Ali' is an alias and this portrait is shot as to protect his identity.
